3/11 Runthrough Notes

high-school-musical-status-quo-gif

HSM Run 3/11/15

General Notes-

  • Overall, everything looks good, it’s definitely coming together. We have a show- yay!
  • More energy is needed from everyone. This show is nonstop energy – everything needs to always be at a 10. You should feel tired after every scene.
  • CELL PHONES- You can have your phones onstage (and you should) but you need to be using them IN CHARACTER. That means – NO TEXTING, SURFING, WHATEVER. We saw a few people doing that during this run and it is super obvious. Please don’t!
  • Pacing should be quicker during dialogues – dialogue is coming kind of slow, it should be a little faster during the conversations.
  • Diction and projection – if you have speaking lines, make sure you enunciate all of your consonants. This is something you have to do consciously; you need to always be thinking about it. Projection is still an issue for mostly everyone (exceptions = Jaq Scott & Darbus – you two are consistently loud, gold star!) Remember that exercise that we did…the sound needs to come from your diaphragms – not your throats.
  • All actions, body language, and facial expressions need to be bigger – play to the back of the house. You’ll feel totally ridiculous, but that’s how you’ll know you’re doing it right. 😉

ACT I

Wildcat Cheer-

EVERYONE NEEDS TO HIT A POSE AT THE END OF THE SONG 🙂 Hold for applause too

Start Of Something New-

  • Everyone needs more energy
  • Listen to the piano y’all
  • Review blocking/choreo
  • Boys quieter on the “ahhh”s

Homeroom/hallway-

  • Sharpay and Ryan reactions need to be bigger, more annoying – be listening to Darbus, on the edge of your seat, smiling at her, teacher’s pet kind of stuff.
  • Everyone needs to be bigger/more charactery things.
  • Darbus missed her cue to pass the note to Jaq

Getcha Head In The Game

  • Troy and Jocks, watch your diction when you’re singing – it’s a little sluggish and hard to understand.
  • All – you need more energy. This is supposed to be a “getting pumped up song.” Remember what we discussed at rehearsal the other day – you need to be super intense about getting your head in the game, and it needs to be a different intensity from the boy band parts. The “ball up booyah” part is looking nice but the rest of it needs more oomph.

Chem Lab

  • You’ll have desks/chairs.
  • Sharpay, you need to be a little more annoying/nasty in this scene when you’re badmouthing Troy – it needs to be more obvious that you are making it up to attempt to “scare” Gabriella away.

Detention

  • You guys need to enter faster!
  • Bear, ostrich, monkey – bigger
  • Taylor – cheerleader’ese can it be ditzier? Like…more valley girl, less drawn out?
  • Coach – “what the heck are they doing here?” – can that be more incredulous? Like you are totally flabberghasted to see Troy and Chad there, be more weirded out.

Auditions

  • This is looking great you guys!!!!!
  • 🙂 🙂 🙂
  • Courtney/Susan you sound incredible!!!!!

What I’ve Been Looking For

  • A little quiet – Ryan should be a bit louder
  • Thespians should have reactions during their song – how do you feel about Sharpay & Ryan? They always get the part right? Annoying! Let’s see that!
  • Kelsi – start practicing your expressions and movements while playing piano 🙂

Cellular Fusion

More energy! 🙂

Status Quo

  • We’ll need to work these entrances….
  • Energy needs to be bigger
  • “Creme brulee” 🙂
  • Sharpay and Ryan interact with the students when you are coming down during the “no no”

ACT II

Opening Scene / Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You

  • A little more flirtation in this scene – you guys have already fallen for each other here, so this is the scene where you’re basically revealing to one another how you feel. It can be shy flirtation, but it definitely needs a little more cutesiness.
  • Vocals need work here

***ZEKE/SHARPAY Scene was skipped*** 😦

Wildcat Cheer Reprise

  • Hold for applause
  • Exit/enter in character — how do you guys feel about being at practice? Is there another place you’d rather be? Do you guys like each other? Do you like the Britneys? Etc

Bball Practice Scene

  • Martha “hip hop hooray” – pound your chest/shoulderblade then peace sign out/up.

Counting On You

  • Jocks move your group more stage right; Brainz move more stage left (You guys are too close together!)
  • Good intensity at the end 🙂
  • Gab and Troy – your “aaahhh” was loud and fierce, just let it go on a little longer
  • Zeke – can you be even more excited about foie gras tartlet? Like you are super proud of it! And then let your face fall when you realize Troy is not into it. (Foie gras is illegal in a lot of places and also pretty gross by a lot of people’s standards, so the more excited you are about it, the funnier your line will be.)
  • Gab can you let out a small little sob when you put your head in your hands?

When There Was Me And You

  • Sounds gorgeous!
  • More emotion needed in your facial expressions – let’s see your pain!

Rehearsal Room Scene

  • Sharpay – can your “who?” be more like…obviously on-purpose clueless?

Start Of Something New Reprise/Scene

  • Gab + Troy interact with one another more as you are singing to each other, reach out and hold hands or touch each other on the arm, it can be spontaneous and not choreographed, but remember that you really really like each other! 🙂

We’re All In This Together / Reprise

  • Jaq take your time with the announcements and react to what Darbus has just given to you. Break out of your “DJ” persona to react to her. The audience needs time to adjust to this plot twist too, so it’s okay if you take a couple of beats to react.
  • Jocks/Brainiac Ensembles bigger reactions throughout the entire scene
  • Zeke you sound really good on this song!
  • “Make our dreams come true…” – don’t drop the “true”
  • Martha, Taylor, Kratnoff – you guys have wonderful energy here!
  • Brainiacs, when the Jocks go offstage to get their letters, you should be “brainstorming” your plan, even though you are singing still. Taylor, be gesturing wildly, like you are sharing the plan, everyone else listening intently and singing, maybe nodding heads or taking notes.
  • Jocks, when you get back onstage with your letters, if you have extra time after getting in place, just be grooving to the music excitedly.
  • Darbus, get into place during the “together, together.”
  • Jaq enter at the same time Darbus does.

Bop To The Top

  • Coach, move all the way stage R, almost like you’re against the wall (think of Kali’s spot during Our Town)
  • Listen to each other please! Various groups are off from each other.
  • Confidence – your long notes are dropping off at the end and sounding weaker than they should!
  • More energy needed, esp from Sharpay & Ryan.
  • Jaq- you will have a flashlight after the blackout. 🙂

Breaking Free

  • Ensemble members/company – You shouldn’t be entering the back of the auditorium until Troy and Gabriella enter.
  • Ensemble – you need to be SILENT when you are back there. You will distract audience members otherwise.
  • Troy – be focused on getting ready to sing, so that Gabriella breaks your concentration when she says “I can’t do it.”
  • Ensemble – spread out in the back of the house, don’t cluster at the end of the aisle.
  • When Troy hits his louder volume “soaring” Gabriella you need to get a little louder too.
  • Dialogue btwn Coach & Troy needs to be louder
  • Ending vocals when everyone joins in needs more energy & confidence – it sounds too tentative and sleepy.

We’re All In This Together/Finale/Ending Scene

  • All – the countdown (5, 4, 3, 2,1) happens during the blackout before lights come up
  • All- you need to be SILENT when the dialogue starts – Darbus has the first line. The cheering should only last about 5 seconds or so
  • Chad – diction on “Game Ball” – make sure you enunciate the M and B
  • SMILE! The dance looks awesome, let’s see some more happy faces y’all! 🙂
  • Remember to dance while you walk if you’re moving spaces – Kaitlyn/Taylor gets gold star for this! She bops along with every step and it’s super cute.
  • Sharpay make your arms stronger during your solo – raise them up higher or make it sharper
  • All ensembles minus cheers – dance/freestyle during the wildcat cheer at the end
  • Bows we will do
